Wanaka

Often referred to as "the jewel in the South Islands crown" Wanaka is undoubtedly the most picturesque and versatile of venues to offer a fly fishing academy. We have a great 4 season climate, plenty of fishing options, and a "classroom" that is second to none.

A friendly and vibrant small town of 5000, Wanaka is small enough to offer personal and friendly service, while large enough to cater for a host of other non-fishing activities. It boasts generous retailing as well as diverse restaurants and quality accommodation options, set amongst a fantastic mountain backdrop with stunning lakes, rivers and creeks on its doorstep.

Wanaka's early history includes being a small Maori settlement, and a stop over en route to the West Coast on their quest to gather greenstone, or pounamu to make tools and artefacts. The first Europeans arrived in the area in the mid 1850's, and after a brief gold rush,  the attention has turned to farming and tourism. It is a favourite place for many generations of Kiwis to go on holiday due to it's relaxed and laid back atmosphere.
